Things To Do When Traveling In Cambodia

Cambodia is a land on the mend. From 1977 through 1980, the Khmer Rouge ruled the country, fanatics bent on genocide. Millions were killed and the period was put to film in the movie, “The Killing Fields.” Fortunately, those days are over and the country is becoming a tourist destination.

Cambodia is a land of incredible contrast. Thick forest, mountains and pristine rivers compliment amazing white beaches. When you get down to it, however, travelers know Cambodia for two things, Angkor Wat and the nastiest roads around. But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia. The city is a combination of old French beauty and modern condominiums. The city is full of amazing Wats [Buddist monasteries], including Wat Ounalom, Wat Phnom and Wat Moha Montrei. Modern buildings surround these monasteries and it’s difficult to avoid a feeling that the old ways are being lost.

Still, the vibrancy of the city is impressive considering the fact that it was completely abandoned for three years in the last 70s. During this period, the Khmer Rouge tried to return the Cambodian people to their agricultural heritage and evacuated all cities. The only exception, of course, is Tuol Sleng, a high school used to torture and kill “enemies of the state.” Just beyond the city, one will also find the infamous killing fields where thousands upon thousands were put to death.

Sihanoukville

Sihanoukville is a small, sleepy village on the Southwest edge of Cambodia. Fairly undeveloped, the area is an oasis similar to the beaches of Thailand. The difference, however, is the lack of tourists. Depending on the time of year, the beaches can be more or less empty and privacy assured. Rooms run between $5 and $15 a night and come with private bathrooms. If you are looking to lounge professionally, Sihanoukville is a very good place to do it.

Angkor Wat

Stunning. There is no other word for the temples of Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat is a temple surrounded by hundreds of others. Each is unique and worth a look. The most famous are Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Phrom. Angkor Wat is in the best shape as well as the most known. The Bayon is impressive, but the constant mob of tourist makes it a pain to visit. Ta Phrom is amazing because it has been left to the jungle, which is to say trees and the structure have become one in many areas. If you have seen Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie, you have seen Ta Phrom. Personally, I prefer Angkor Wat to the Pyramids in Egypt.

Roads From Hell

Cambodian roads are evil. There is simply no other way to put it. The country is hit by monsoons every year and is still recovering from the Khmer Rouge. This combination has resulted in roads with huge potholes, missing bridges and pretty much the worst elements of Dante’s Hell. Avoid them if at all possible!

Saving up to go travelling

Most people decide to take a gap year after they go to university or even before, but many find it difficult to save up enough money to go. It can be difficult to save money from your first job or even part-time job so here are a few tips to get you on your way to your gap year adventure.

There are several ways to calculate how much you need to earn to be able to go traveling and there are several problems that you will encounter along the way. Several banks will be able to advise you on the best accounts for savings; however some of the best will be building societies. They will probably be the ones with the best interest rates.

So once you have set up a savings account you need to decide how much you need to save. The expenses that you will have will be varied, but the main expenses will be your round the world ticket and the money that you will need when you are there, including all food and accommodation.

If you plan your trip well and decide where you want to visit well in advance then you should have a good idea how much you will spend. You should also have a look at the average cost of accommodation in the area. Sites like Lonely Planet are good for things like this and there will also be reviews on the towns and cities in the region.

You should also account for travel in the country, including buses and trains. You will also be able to find this information on the internet. As well as all these expenses you should factor in food and even exchange rates. Once you have decided how much you will need, you have to have a look at your expenses here. How much can you afford to put away each month? It may be daunting at first but there are probably a few ways that you can curb your expenditure.

If it is possible to live with your parents then that might be a good option, as you will save money on accommodation, bills and council tax. If this is not an option then you could have a look at getting a part time job.

Using An Ipad Vpn While Travelling Abroad

Picture a traveler with an iPad waiting at an international airport lounge in between flights. The traveler discovers that there is a wireless connection available and decides jump online with the iPad. Picture also that this same user is unmindful that the wireless network is unsecure. This user is now open to data vulnerabilities. It is moments like this that highlight the importance of a personal iPad VPN service.

How a Personal iPad VPN Gives Users Wings

Before considering how a personal VPN service can make the Internet safer, it is important to understand a little more about Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology. VPN is not software. It is a service that is a synergy of hardware and software. A personal iPad VPN is a VPN particularly adapted to the needs of iPad users. It provides a secure connection between iPad users and websites and online services that are accessed on the Internet. When a personal iPad VPN user types in a URL on the address bar of their browser, the iPad connects with the VPN. The personal iPad VPN then redirects the request to the website theyre trying to access. It then transmits the requested information back. The website that they access can only see that the request is coming from the VPN service providers address. There are other advantages of personal VPNs as well.

How Does the Personal iPad VPN Help the User?

Data that is sent from the iPad to the personal iPad VPN is sent through a secure tunnel. It runs through the Internet, establishing a secure connection between the iPad user and the website or online service. The data that is exchanged is encapsulated using encryption (depending on whether the user chose L2TP, OpenVPN or PPTP service). Compared to an Internet home-based connection which doesnt use a VPN, the personal data the iPad VPN transmits and receives is never compromised or accessible by outsiders.

Here are a few of the Benefits of an iPad VPN:

1.Secure Payments with Peace of Mind
Thousands of iPad users daily make online purchases. This means they have to perform a payment transaction via their iPad. The payment could be made using their credit card information, which is authenticated by their bank online, or via a third party payment gateway system that is implemented by the app store. Either way, they will need to send their payment information via the Internet. When using an unsecured connection, this information can be accessed by hackers. However, when using a personal iPad VPN, the data is encrypted. This means there is no opportunity for identity thieves to snatch credit card information.

2.Accessing Confidential Data from the Office
Lets take the case of an iPad user on a business trip. This user needs to access digital documents located online while traveling. Accessing documents from outside the office is susceptible to snooping and hacking. To ensure that the data exchange takes place in a secure environment, a personal iPad VPN is the perfect solution.
